Japanese company UCC, in partnership with Atlantic Commodities Vietnam (Acom, a subsidiary of global trader Ecom), has launched a regenerative agriculture pilot in Vietnam, the world's largest producer of robusta coffee.
The project is testing shade-tree planting, cover cropping, and biochar-based compost to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers and improve resilience to climate change. So far, 1,757 shade-tree seedlings have been distributed to 38 participating farmers.
UCC aims for 100% sustainable sourcing by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2040, with Vietnam among its four priority countries alongside Brazil, Tanzania, and Uganda. Vietnam's robusta production is forecast at 32.5 million bags for the 2026/27 season.
