August figures point to a softer patch for Ceylon tea. According to brokers Forbes & Walker, Sri Lanka exported 22.82 million kg of tea during the month, roughly 0.88 million kg less than in August 2025. The Export Development Board (EDB) put tea earnings at $130.92 million, down 7.76% year on year, making tea one of the drags on a slight dip in the country's overall exports.

There was a brighter side: the average FOB price rose in rupee terms to about Rs 1,910 per kilo (around $5.74). Türkiye, Iraq and Russia remain among the main buyers. Over January to August, shipments reached 166.32 million kg, more than 8 million kg below the same period last year.

Supply at the Colombo auction is also tightening. The 22-23 September sale offered just 4.83 million kg, the smallest volume since April 2024. For black tea drinkers, it is a reminder that well-made Ceylon lots are increasingly in demand.
