Nepal's Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Geeta Chaudhary, decided on August 1, 2026 to form a specialized task force to reform the country's tea and coffee sector, following a meeting with officials from the National Tea and Coffee Development Board at its central office in Kirtipur.
The discussion focused on the policy and institutional reforms needed to improve production, processing, marketing, and overall promotion of Nepal's tea and coffee industries. The minister called on the board to become "more competitive, business-oriented, and farmer-friendly," instructing it to finalize a restructuring roadmap and submit a reform report within two weeks.
Among the issues raised were trade barriers imposed by India on Nepali tea imports, which are hurting Nepali farmers and tea factories — a sign of the growing pressure smaller regional producers face in export markets.
