The European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published a study modeling the economic effects of tightening residue limits for 18 hazardous pesticides that are already banned within the EU but still found on some imported goods. The analysis covers 235 agricultural commodity categories and 86 exporting countries, including coffee.

The findings could shape future EU trade-policy decisions on pesticide residues in food. Vietnam, one of the world's largest coffee exporters, has already voiced concern that stricter rules could affect its shipments to the European market.

The study follows closely on the heels of the EU's new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which took effect on August 12 and also extends recyclability requirements to the coffee and tea sectors — another sign of growing regulatory pressure on global supply chains.
