As of August 12, 2026, the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) became legally binding across all 27 member states, bringing one of the biggest shifts in years for the tea and coffee industry. The key change: tea bags, permeable coffee pods, and sachets are now officially classified as packaging and must meet strict industrial composting and biodegradability standards.
The regulation also sets broader requirements — all packaging must be recyclable, plastic packaging must contain 10-35% postconsumer recycled content depending on the format, and excessive weight or volume is banned under new minimization rules. Producers will need to register in national producer registers and take on extended financial responsibility for end-of-life waste management. Starting January 2030, single-use plastic packaging for condiments, coffee creamers, and portioned sugar will be banned outright in the foodservice sector.
The shift marks a move from voluntary sustainability pledges to mandatory compliance, with similar reforms already underway in Australia, the UK, Canada, and several US states. For tea brands like Premium Tea, the trend confirms how central sustainable, biodegradable packaging has become to European consumers' choices.
