The Global Coffee Platform (GCP), German development agency GIZ, IDH and Solidaridad are pooling their work into a single set of coffee-sector guidance on responsible procurement. The effort merges the procurement principles that GCP, IDH and Solidaridad introduced in March 2026 with a parallel GIZ initiative run alongside German retailers.

The aim is hands-on guidance that helps buyers support better farmer incomes and more resilient supply chains. The groups start from an earlier finding that the coffee trade creates enough value overall, yet shares it so unevenly that farming remains unprofitable for many smallholders. Eighteen companies back the work, including large traders and roasters such as illycaffè and JDE Peet's, as well as retailers like Lidl, Kaufland and REWE.

Consultation and revisions are planned through the second quarter of 2027. We sell only tea, but fair returns for growers are just as pressing an issue on tea estates.
