A research team from Yunnan Minzu University and Kunming University of Science and Technology in China has turned spent coffee grounds into a nitrogen-rich biochar capable of neutralizing hydrogen sulfide, a highly toxic industrial gas. Lab tests run under conditions simulating real industrial environments — including humidity and elevated carbon dioxide — achieved more than 99% conversion of hydrogen sulfide, with sulfur selectivity close to 100%.
The resulting elemental sulfur can be put to further use in agriculture and industry, offering a more sustainable alternative to conventional gas-treatment methods. The findings carry real practical weight: over 6 million tons of spent coffee grounds are generated worldwide every year, and more than half end up in landfills or incinerators.
Coffee grounds are roughly 70% carbon by weight, making them an economically viable feedstock for activated-carbon materials used in industrial pollution control — a new use for a byproduct that would otherwise simply go to waste.
