As of May 1, 2026, China introduced a zero-tariff policy covering a range of goods from African countries, including South African rooibos — the last remaining import duty on the product has now been fully removed. The move builds on an earlier 2024 reduction, when duties fell from 15-30% to around 6%.
The South African Rooibos Council (SARC) welcomed the decision, calling it a major opportunity to grow exports to the world's largest tea-consuming market. The preferential scheme covers exports shipped between May 2026 and April 2028, provided exporters meet rules-of-origin and certification requirements.
China is seen as a high-potential market for rooibos amid rising demand for premium, caffeine-free, health-focused beverages — exactly the profile of this 100% natural South African infusion.
