On 26 September 2026, a 5 kg lot of pressed Pu'er-style tea made in Assam sold for Rs 12,000 per kilo at the Gauhati Tea Auction Centre. The tea was produced by Gauripur Tea Industry in Golaghat district and offered through the broker J Thomas.

True Pu'er is a post-fermented tea from China's Yunnan province, prized for its earthy, woody depth. The Assam interpretation is made from the local Camellia sinensis var. assamica — the same plant behind classic Assam black tea — and pressed into cakes. Industry voices described the sale as a milestone for the state's specialty teas, while Assam's chief minister said the region's tea is finding new ways to earn a premium.

The result comes as Assam raises its incentive for specialty teas from Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kilo for the 2026-27 season, a sign that the region wants to be known for quality as well as volume.
