South Korea's A Twosome Place, a chain built around pairing coffee with cake, opened its first café in the United States on 17 October in Alexandria, Virginia. World Coffee Portal reports long queues and strong sales on opening day.
The café sits on King Street in the historic Old Town district, a short hop from Washington, D.C., and seats 78 guests including an outdoor area, according to local press. Founded in 2002, the brand runs more than 1,750 cafés at home, and its best-seller is a strawberry, chocolate and cream cake that is trademark-registered in South Korea.
Two more locations are due to open soon, with plans to expand across the wider Washington metro area. World Coffee Portal suggests the US could become a key growth market for Korean coffee chains looking beyond East Asia.
